Dell Latitude X1

Specs

  • Intel Pentium-M: 1.1GHz
  • Intel 915GMS chipset
  • Intel GMA 900 video
  • Intel ICH6 / HDA / AC97 audio with Sigmatel codec
  • 12“ TFT LCD @ 1280×768
  • RAM DDR2-400 SO-DIMM
    • 256MB (onboard), expansion up to 1280MB (256 onboard + 1024MB module)
  • 1.8” PATA HDD
  • USB (x2), Firewire, Gigabit ethernet

Good Points

  • Very small - barely bigger than the tiny Thinkpad 240 series
  • Decent quality keyboard - not a chiclet type
  • Plenty of CPU power for even the most demanding DOS games ever
  • Supports USB floppy drives natively - both to boot and access within DOS
  • Built in ethernet and wifi
  • Completely fanless
  • Emulated Soundblaster digital audio, Yamaha FM and soft MIDI synth supported by VSBHDA
  • Emulated Soundblaster digital audio, Yamaha FM supported by SBEMU

Bad Points

  • No built-in removeable storage
  • BIOS is almost completely locked down, virtually nothing to configure
  • No native Soundblaster capability
  • Wifi card supports up to 'G' only - though can be replaced
  • Widescreen - not ideal for 4:3 / 5:4 DOS games
  • The Intel GMA video is not the fastest - some earlier AGP designs are faster; though it's still more than enough speed for even hi-res DOS games
  • The internal HDD is an odd 1.8“ drive - cannot be easily swapped with a newer 2.5” drive; requires a 1.8“ to (something) converter board
  • Mono internal speaker
