Rackham Ophidian Alliance, Desert Display Shelf

This display was put together to display my collection of Ophidian Alliance miniatures, from the Confrontation/Hybrid game by Rackham, released around 2000.

Parts list:

  • 10mm XPS foam board (38cm x 25cm)
  • Bag of assorted grit/small rubble, etc
  • Bag of mixed fine/coarse sand
  • PVA white glue
  • Toilet paper
  • Various Vallejo Game Colour acrylic paints (Black, Beasty Brown, Snakebite Leather, Tan, Bleached Bone) applied with both airbrush and drybrush
  • Gamers Grass 'Dry Steppe' scenics

Applying glue and toilet paper to the board, over low hills/mounds created by XPS foam offcuts, and sealing with a mix of fine sand, paint and PVA glue:

Gluing larger grit and coarse sand to the dried surface, applying a first coat of black primer, then an initial layer of tan/sand topcoat:

Giving the whole board a really thin wash of black paint (probably 1:100 mix), then a second wash, and then airbrush with Vallejo Beasty Brown which comes out with a nice red tinge due to the tan beneath it:

Applying a second, slightly darker black wash (maybe 1:50 mix), then starting drybrush layers (starting from Vallejo Beasty Brown, through Snakebite Leather, Bleached Bone and Off-White):

Attaching static grass from the 'Gamers Grass' from the 'Dry Steppe' set, along with larger clumps from the 'XL' set:
